Upper Prospect descendants selected their boulder from the rockpile of local contractor, the Deal’s, in consultation with Avi Miller and Shawn Powers of Coastal Restoration and Masonry. Their granite boulder is approximately 3’ tall, and will sit on a second ironstone rock, lifting it another 12”.
Both boulders have been carved over six weeks at Coastal Restoration by Avi Miller.
Stay tuned here to see the installation of the monument and the unveiling in Upper Prospect.

Upper Prospect
THE COMMUNTY’S ROLE AFTER THE WRECK
Upper Prospect has a clear view to the wreck site, and Thomas Coolen is said to have seen the flares. He woke some others and by daybreak, they had loaded boats with extra oars, rope, water, salt pork, and bread. Nicholas Christian reported,
“It blew so hard and there was so heavy a sea on, that although the wind was fair and the distance only about three miles, we could not go down by the usual and direct course, but had to go around about the inside islands. All the boats from Upper Prospect went inside, as well as ours. We landed at Michael Clancy’s stage on the east side of Marrs Island, the wreck being on the west side, and went across with no loss of time to the scene of the wreck.”
They arrived by 8:00 AM and provided welcomed relief to the Lower Prospect rescuers. By 9:30 AM, all that could be rescued were ashore.
